What Can I Expect?

Flap-Based Reconstruction: In all flap procedures, tissue from one area of your body, such as the abdomen or back, is transferred with its blood supply to your breast area to recreate a breast that feels, looks and moves more naturally than an implant. This approach has the benefit of bringing healthy tissue and blood flow to the compromised areas at the mastectomy site. DIEP flap reconstruction offers the benefits of other flap procedures along with added advantages, including soft tissue and muscle preservation.

Tissue Expander/Implant Reconstruction: In this technique, a balloon-like expander is placed under the chest muscle and gradually filled with saline over several weeks to expand the skin and soft tissue. The expander is ultimately replaced with a silicone or saline breast implant like those used during breast augmentation in Scottsdale.

Direct-to-Implant Reconstruction: This is a single-stage reconstruction in which a breast implant is placed immediately after a mastectomy.

Reconstruction may be performed at the same time as a mastectomy, or any following time. Our Scottsdale breast reconstruction is often covered by medical insurance for women who have had partial or complete mastectomies due to cancer or other health reasons. In fact, federal law requires health insurance providers to cover such treatments as:

  • Breast cancer treatment
  • Breast reconstruction after mastectomy
  • Cosmetic surgery on the unaffected breast to provide symmetry

During Recovery

Most breast reconstruction patients spend a few days in the hospital after surgery. Recovery time will be based on several factors–for example, if the procedure is performed immediately following your mastectomy or if it was postponed to a later date.

Whether an implant or your own tissue is used will be another factor. Patients who elect implant-based reconstruction typically need between 2 to 3 weeks of recovery. By comparison, recovery for flap-based reconstruction is approximately 6 to 8 weeks. After any type of breast reconstruction, you can schedule an appointment to have the nipples and areolas restored a few months from your final breast reconstructive procedure.

Testimonials

Traveled from out of state to have Dr. Prichard do my breast reconstruction after a cancer diagnosis. THAT’S how highly I thought of what I had seen from him, and how much I initially trusted him and his care. After finishing the process, I can honestly say I could not be happier with the results. At a super crummy time of life, he has given me something to be so happy about, and thankful for. Not only is he a FANTASTIC surgeon, but so generous and kind and personable. Honestly and truly a life changing experience working with him, in the BEST possible way.”

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Am I a Candidate for Breast Reconstruction?

Most candidates for breast reconstruction in Scottsdale need a restoration after undergoing a mastectomy or lumpectomy in one or both breasts, or other breast cancer treatment that has altered shape, size, or appearance. Other reasons for reconstruction may arise from injuries to the breast tissue, genetic issues or extensive weight loss.

  • Will I Have Sensation in my Reconstructed Breast(s)?

This depends on the type and extent of reconstruction being done. Most breast reconstruction procedures will result in reduced sensation. You may experience some numbness or loss of sensation that could return over time but your surgeon will know best what to expect based on the extent of your specific procedure.

  • How Long Does It Take to Recover?

During the first 3-4 weeks there will be tenderness, swelling and bruising in the affected tissues which should abate after that time. Exercise and activity should be kept light for the first 6-8 weeks.

  • If I Get a Breast Implant, How Long Will It Last?

Breast implants have no expiration date, but they typically last between 10 to 20 years. In some rare instances, implants may shift or rupture and will need to be replaced earlier than that. It is recommended that they get changed or removed during that time to prevent future complications.

  • Will the Reconstructed Breast Match My Other Breast?

The surgeon will do their utmost to match the dimensions and shape of the other breast. The option to cosmetically alter the other breast is available at the same time to maximize symmetry between the breasts.

  • What is the Average Cost?

The average cost per breast can range between $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the work being done.

  • Will My Insurance Cover Them?

Breast reconstruction after breast cancer is generally covered by health insurance.
