Before & After Photos
What is a Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure. During your breast augmentation surgery, Dr. Prichard uses his unique approach when placing the implant, which you and Dr. Prichard will have agreed upon during your consultation. The implant is carefully positioned through a very small incision for minimal scarring. The type of implant you select will be one of the determining factors for the locations of the incisions. However, Dr. Prichard will take the patient’s personal preferences and needs into account as well.
What Should You Expect?
After making the incision, Dr. Prichard establishes a pocket for the breast implant. Ideal placement of the pocket depends on the volume of one’s natural breast tissue, the type of implant selected, and the overall appearance you desire.
There are several techniques for breast augmentation, which Dr. Prichard can discuss with you to determine what will achieve the best results. Listed below, are a sampling of the varying placement techniques that can be used:
- Dual plane – For a dual plane augmentation, the implant is partially positioned behind the pectoralis major muscle. By doing so, this essentially boosts the muscle and breast tissue forward, while granting the tissue an improved level of support.
- Subglandular – For a subglandular augmentation, the implant is positioned in front of the pectoralis major muscle, but behind the mammary glands. With a subglandular augmentation, the implant is not as well protected as it would be with a dual plane augmentation, but it is a less painful recovery.
Additionally, breast augmentation can be performed using fat transfer. Learn more on our fat transfer breast augmentation page.
What About recovery?
Some things to know about recovery after your breast augmentation procedure:
- Patients generally are able to return home the same day of their boob job procedure
- It is completely normal to experience some bruising and swelling, as well as an overall tight sensation in the chest area, at first
- You will be asked to wear a surgical support bra to assist with the healing and support of your new breasts
- During the first few weeks you should avoid any heavy lifting, pulling or pushing
- Most patients feel ready to pick up their daily routines, including work or school, within a week or two
- More strenuous activities, such as intense exercise, may be taken up again within 3 to 4 weeks after your surgery

Implant Types to Choose From
Today’s modern cosmetic arsenal presents the breast augmentation client with a multitude of options for self-improvement. Implants come in every shape, size, texture and specification imaginable, allowing the doctor to customize your procedure to your anatomy and lifestyle, as well as your explicit wishes. Below you will find a general overview of the basic implant types that Dr. Prichard works with.
Silicone VS Saline
- FDA Approved
- Filled with silicone
- Will not pop and deflate
- Does not ripple
- Comes in smooth or textured surfaces
- Comes in round or anatomical (more natural shape)
- Cost is higher than saline implants
- Slightly larger incision than saline
- FDA Approved
- Filled with saline, which is absorbable by your body should it rupture
- Deflation if rupture occurs
- Chance of rippling
- Comes in smooth or textured surfaces
- Comes in round shape
- Cost is less than silicone implants
- Smaller incision than silicone
Saline implants are typically chosen for their:
- Lower risk of complications
- Greater safety
- Smaller incision site
The implant is comprised of a saltwater-filled shell, and if it ruptures, there is no damage done, as the body will simply absorb the fluids. Unfortunately, saline implants are not always appropriate for women who require significant enlargement, so it will be up to the doctor to decide during consultation if they are the right choice for the patient’s desired outcome.
These popular implants are chosen for the following qualities:
- More natural look and feel
- No rippling
- Option of Gummy Bear shape
- Won't pop and deflate
The silicone implants tend to look and feel more natural than saline due to their silicone gel that evades rippling and shifting. Recently, the Gummy Bear implant has risen to prominence among plastic surgeons. The Gummy Bear uses a type of “form-stable” silicone, shaped like a tear to better mimic a woman’s natural curves. Gummy Bears offer long-term stability and longevity, but do tend to cost more than their predecessors.
Frequently asked questions
Can I breastfeed after a breast augmentation?
If you are considering a breast augmentation before having children and breastfeeding, be sure to mention this to your doctor, as your ability to later breastfeed may depend on where the incision is made in the breast. A breast augmentation surgery performed very carefully should leave your milk ducts intact, and thus breastfeeding still possible.
How long do breast implants last?
Unfortunately, breast implants are not a once in a lifetime device or surgery - the implant materials do not last that long. Another factor is that over long periods of time your body will change, and you may want an updated breast augmentation. While some doctors say that you should expect a revision breast surgery every 10 or so years, if your implants are in good shape, there is no need to replace them. Modern day implants are produced with much better technology and last longer that those in the past.
Will I have loss of sensation after my Breast Augmentation?
Immediately following a breast augmentation surgery, it is common for there to be initial numbness and loss of sensation around the breasts and nipples, as the nerves in the area have been traumatized by the surgery. For most patients, it takes three to six months to regain sensation, and that may still be less than it was before the surgery. For some, it can take up to two years to regain sensation.
How soon after my surgery can I exercise?
After your breast augmentation surgery, it is recommended to abstain from any physical exercise or heavy lifting for minimally four weeks. You may feel you know when your body is ready to begin handling more physical strain, however you should still check with your doctor to get medical okay first. Healing after a surgery is important for both your health and the efficacy of the procedure.
Do I need a breast lift with my breast augmentation?
A breast lift is not always done with a breast augmentation. A breast lift is recommended if you have sagging or drooping breasts, and loose skin. In this scenario, while a breast augmentation procedure will augment and moderately lift one's breasts, it does not replace a breast lift procedure. During your consultation with your breast augmentation surgeon, he/she will determine if it would be best to include a breast lift in your breast augmentation.
Will I have big scars?
After your breast augmentation, your incisions will be healing and diminishing over the next several months. As with any scar, proper healing and time are the best remedies. Dr. Prichard will go over the incision location options prior to your appointment - thankfully, they are generally placed through discreet locations such as the under-breast crease, armpit or areola.
Benefits of breast augmentation
Women who have undergone breast augmentation speak of the many benefits they have experienced from their newly enhanced bust line. Below are just a few of the benefits that tend to come with having a breast augmentation:
- An increased sense of self-esteem
- Clothing becomes more flattering on one’s frame
- Enhanced breasts can create a more youthful appearance
- Breasts achieve a beautifully balanced shape and size
- Provides a more pleasing feminine silhouette
Changes in the breasts
As the female body matures, a number of distressing changes take place, many of which are amplified by the acts of giving birth and nursing. The breasts lose their natural volume, voluptuousness, shape, and sometimes even their symmetry, slowly deflating. In addition to combatting the effects of aging, there are many other reasons why a woman might pursue breast augmentation, including poor genes or massive weight loss.
However, the result after surgery is always the same: a revitalized, youthful profile; a fuller, more feminine physique; and elevated self-confidence, especially at the beach or out on the town.Learn more about reasons for breast augmentation
